When is your memory strongest?
Everyone's memory ability is different, and we all have our own optimal time for memorization. To achieve better results, it's important to study your own memory abilities and find the most suitable memorization methods and times.
In 1978, Professors Rita Dunn and Kenneth Dunn of St. John's University in the United States conducted an experiment. They recruited volunteers and compared their memory performance throughout the day. Based on the results, they divided people's optimal memory times into four categories. Approximately 30% of people have the best memory in the morning, meaning they are already in a state of absorbing new knowledge as soon as they wake up. Another 30% of people have the best memory in the afternoon, meaning their brains only begin to work after lunch. Yet another 30% of people have exceptionally strong memories at night; these are the people commonly referred to as "wildcats." About 10% of people have an uncertain optimal memory time, or they can concentrate on memorizing more at any time they need to study.
By paying attention to when you are most alert or when you learn and memorize things the fastest, you can better determine your own optimal memory time.
So let's take a less busy day and try this:
First, after waking up in the morning, pick up a book and try to recall some content you already know (not necessarily from this book) to familiarize your brain with the process. Then, look through the book and see if you can remember a new passage. If you can, remember that result. Later in the morning, try to recall what you remembered in the morning. If you can't remember it, even after looking through the book, it means that morning isn't the best time for memorization, and it also confirms that your memory isn't very good
in the morning. However, if you find your mind exceptionally clear when recalling in the morning, and you might even remember it better than in the morning, then the best time for memorization might be in the morning, not necessarily. Second, repeat this process at a different time of day after a few days to see when your memory performs best. The reason for waiting a few days is to prevent continuous testing in one day from making it harder to pinpoint the optimal time; it's about giving your memory a buffer period. Once you've determined your optimal time for memorization, consciously engage in more memorization activities during that time. This will improve your memory efficiency and also train your memory skills.
